Riders with their e-bikes at an overlook on a summer evening

Summer in Glacier

The whole road is open, the high trails melt out, and the lots fill by sunrise. July through September, with the driving and the parking handled from our shop.

Summer is when everything is open and everyone is here. Going-to-the-Sun Road runs end to end, the high trails at Logan Pass and Many Glacier melt out through July, the lakes warm enough to float, and the park manages the crowds with parking limits and valley closures instead of reservations.

Our summer answer is the shuttle and the guide: ride from Columbia Falls to the trailhead with the parking solved, or spend a day on an e-bike, a scenic drive, a hike in the Flathead National Forest or a float on the river.

What Happens in Summer

  • No vehicle reservation was required anywhere in the park in 2026; the park uses temporary closures when a valley such as Many Glacier fills.
  • The Logan Pass lot fills by sunrise, and in 2026 parking there was limited to three hours.
  • The park's Logan Pass shuttle ran July 1 to September 7, 2026 with a ticket from Recreation.gov; it serves Logan Pass only.
  • Once the road is fully open, bikes are kept off the Apgar to Logan Pass section for part of each afternoon through late September.
  • Higher trails open through July: Grinnell Glacier usually by mid to late July, Ptarmigan Tunnel around the second week.
  • Bears are active all summer; hike in a group, carry bear spray and keep 100 yards from any bear.

Good to Know

Do I need a reservation to drive into Glacier?
Not in 2026. The park suspended vehicle reservations parkwide and manages the busiest valleys with temporary closures when they fill. Check the park's road status page the morning you go, or let our shuttle handle it.
How do I get to Many Glacier without the parking scramble?
Our Many Glacier hiking shuttle leaves from Columbia Falls and drops you at the trailheads for Grinnell Glacier, Grinnell Lake, Iceberg Lake and Ptarmigan Tunnel, with up to 6 hours to hike. It runs with a minimum of 4 people booked.
Can I still bike Going-to-the-Sun Road in summer?
Yes, in the morning. The park closes the Apgar to Logan Pass section to bikes for part of each afternoon once the road is fully open; our tour and shuttle run on that clock.
Which hikes are open in July?
The low and mid trails are open by July and the high ones follow: the park says Grinnell Glacier is usually fully open by mid to late July and Ptarmigan Tunnel around the second week. Check the park's trail status before you drive.
