Spend a day with the animals and the stories of the valleys south of Glacier, from bison on the range to the shores of the largest freshwater lake in the West.
You will have an incredible opportunity to spot majestic bison, graceful elk, elusive deer, impressive bighorn sheep and much more while exploring the diverse landscapes that lie near Glacier National Park. Along the way, enjoy a scenic tour of Flathead Lake, the largest freshwater lake in the western United States. The day includes a locally sourced lunch and plenty of opportunities to stretch your legs on a few short nature walks, so you can take in the region’s ecosystems up close.
The Land and Its People
You will learn the rich and often untold history of the Indigenous peoples who originally inhabited this land. The Salish, Kootenai and Pend d’Oreille were the prominent tribes of northwest Montana, each with their own distinct traditions, stories and histories that contributed to the colorful tapestry of this area. We visit the Bison Range, an expansive conservation area on tribal lands, for a deeper look at the relationship between these tribes and their environment.
How the Day Goes
We meet at our shop in Columbia Falls and head south, with your guide pointing out the valley’s landmarks and wildlife on the way. At the Bison Range we take the drive slowly, stopping wherever the animals are. Lunch is locally sourced and eaten somewhere scenic. The afternoon brings the Flathead Lake shoreline and short walks before the drive back to the shop.
What to Bring
Comfortable clothing for changing weather, walking shoes, sun protection, a water bottle, a camera, and binoculars if you have them. Your guide carries the bear spray.
